How to split expenses between friends (without ruining the friendship)

By Leandro @ Even · May 7, 2026 · 6 min read

It always starts small: one friend pays the dinner, the other picks up coffees, someone covers the taxi. After a week you have "more or less" an idea of who owes whom — and that's exactly where the resentment starts.

Why unpaid accounts ruin friendships

Debt between friends is rarely about the money. The problem is the uncertainty: nobody remembers the exact amounts, nobody wants to bring it up, and one person ends up feeling taken advantage of. The fix isn't keeping meticulous records in your head — it's having the numbers visible so the conversation never feels awkward.

The 4 steps to split expenses cleanly

  1. Create a shared group for the people involved (a trip, a shared hobby, a regular bunch).
  2. Record expenses the moment they happen. Whoever pays just adds it — who paid, how much, and who participated.
  3. Agree on the split rule before paying: equal, by percentage, or by shares when amounts differ.
  4. Settle the balances at the end. The app works out who owes whom, so only the net difference changes hands.
Tip: settle in small rounds rather than once a year. Shorter cycles keep amounts small and the habit of paying each other back alive.

Dividing by %, shares, or unequal parts

Not every expense is split equally. If three of you share a rental and one has a bigger room, a percentage split reflects that. If someone only joined for half the experience, shares let you include them without forcing an equal share. Recording this instead of rounding in your head means nobody overpays silently.

What about recurring payments?

The gym, the streaming subscription, the shared car insurance — regular expenses are the easiest to forget and the most unfair when uneven. Tracking recurring expenses means they're added automatically, and you always know who's covered what this month.

Use an app so nobody has to do the math

The whole point is to remove the effort. An expense-sharing app keeps everything in one place, synchronized across devices, so every person always sees the same numbers. Let the app do the subtraction — you just enjoy the friendship.
